LCO volunteers participate in roadside cleanup
LCO, May 2021
In the spring sunshine on May 15, 2021, volunteers from Lighthouse Center Oregon (LCO) gathered in excitement to join others for a community service project in the Umpqua valley. Tyee Road is a major road that serves the local neighborhood in Umpqua. The project was cleaning roadsides in a section of Tyee Road that fronts both Lighthouse Center Bakery and Lighthouse Center Oregon. The Umpqua community project organizers worked with Douglas County to coordinate the project. Douglas County provided the vests and garbage bags and the volunteers brought their own gloves and masks.
It was the first in-person Umpqua community roadside cleanup project that the LCO volunteers had participated in since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gathering at Lighthouse Center Bakery, they were happy to be serving together again. The team worked in enthusiasm and camaraderie along Tyee Road towards Lighthouse Center Oregon. Altogether, the team collected 11 bags of trash from a two-mile section of road.
This community service event is usually organized several times a year. The organizers will contact LCO with details of future cleanups to invite LCO volunteers to participate again.
