LCO continues Covid-19 charitable activities after LCB reopens
LCO, July 2020
Four months ago Lighthouse Center Oregon (LCO) activated its Covid-19 charitable operations. Lighthouse Center Bakery (LCB) had decided to temporarily close as a precaution due to the pandemic. The bakery then offered the use of its facilities for LCO’s Covid-19 charitable activities!
Our blog posts shared stories of LCO volunteers using the bakery’s facilities to prepare and deliver food to the local charity network in Douglas County, Oregon. It has been heartwarming to collaborate with the local charities that are serving those in need during these challenging times.
Even though Lighthouse Center Bakery reopened on June 18, LCO is keeping up with its Covid-19 charitable operations. The bakery continues to offer its facilities on the days when it is closed. This allows LCO volunteers to prepare more food to donate to the community. The bakery is also teaming up with LCO by donating all its excess bread, soup, and baked goods.
In this way, LCO continues to help four local charities in Roseburg, Oregon. Monday is now our main delivery day to Roseburg Rescue Mission (a homeless shelter), Fish Food Pantry (Roseburg), Casa de Belen (a children’s shelter), and Safe Haven Maternity Home.
Random acts of kindness
Experiencing the camaraderie among the local charities in the community has been a real eye opener. Everyone is working hard to serve those in need. This inspires us to show appreciation to the kind hearts who are working relentlessly to help others during these difficult times.
Last week, LCO volunteers baked a batch of Oatmeal Raisin Cookies for the Fire Department in Sutherlin, Oregon. The fire fighters are volunteers who take turns to be on-call at the fire station. The fire fighters received our cookie delivery with warm smiles—they were very thankful and happy!
Each week, LCO donates 30 family-sized loaves of bread to Roseburg Rescue Mission’s soup kitchen. Last week, LCO volunteers decided to make carrot cake with cream cheese frosting for the soup kitchen volunteers. It’s our way of saying thanks to them for making and serving meals each day to the homeless people in need.
Whenever we donate our organic wholegrain bread to Casa de Belen, we make sure to pack some homemade wholesome desserts into our delivery to give the children at the shelter an added treat!
Participating in these efforts has been a humbling experience in serving humanity with humanity. We are grateful to Lighthouse Center Bakery for assisting us in this charity effort.
